when you are finished changing, you’re finished.

Tjörnin Pond. Reykjavik, Iceland. December 2012.

When I was in grade school, I wanted to be a marine biologist. I didn’t even know what a marine biologist was, or what it meant to be one. (Yeah, I still have no clue.) In seventh grade I wanted to be the editor for TIME magazine. In college I wanted to be a journalist, an advertising agent, a high school English teacher. I obtained degrees for all, just in case. Over the past eight years at my current job, I’ve entertained becoming a goat farmer, a ski bum, any kind of farmer, a doctor, a teacher again, a bartender, so many other professions that crossed my mind whilst whiskey drunk, selling my house and everything that can’t fit into an Airstream and driving everywhere an Airstream can drive, and then exchanging that Airstream for a new one on a new continent. Sometimes new people I meet make me want to do things I’ve never thought of doing before. Not because I never wanted to do them, but because it never crossed my mind as an option. Other people open up new worlds with even more choices. It’s not that I am never satisfied. It’s just that there are so many things I want to do and want to be, and even those things are constantly changing, because I don’t even know all of my options yet! And I never will. And I am okay with that. Makes every day like opening up a fortune cookie with a slightly more realistic life path, and without having to eat the stale cookie. Unless you’re into stale cookies. Then by all means, eat the cookie.
