when you are finished changing, you’re finished.

Tjörnin Pond. Reykjavik, Iceland. December 2012.

When I was in grade school, I wanted to be a marine biologist. I didn’t even know what a marine biologist was, or what it meant to be one. In fact, I still have no clue. In seventh grade I wanted to be the editor for TIME magazine. Very specific. In college I wanted to be a journalist, work in advertising, be a high school English teacher. I obtained degrees for all, just in case.

Over the past eight years at my current job, I’ve entertained becoming a goat farmer, a ski bum, any kind of farmer, a doctor, a teacher again, a bartender, so many other professions that crossed my mind whilst whiskey drunk, selling my house and everything that can’t fit into a van and driving everywhere a van can drive, and then exchanging that van for a new one on a new continent.

And sometimes new people I meet make me want to do things I’ve never thought of doing before. Not because I never wanted to do them, but because it never crossed my mind as an option. Other people open up new worlds with even more choices. It’s not that I am never satisfied. It’s just that there are so many things I want to do and want to be, and even those things are constantly changing, because I don’t even know all of my options yet! And I never will. And I am okay with that. Makes every day like opening up a fortune cookie with a slightly more realistic life path, and without having to eat the stale cookie. Unless you’re into stale cookies. Then by all means, eat the cookie.
